Common Treatments

Surgical stripping of varicose veins is no longer required.

Radiofrequency (RF) Vein Ablation

At Vein Solutions, we have extensive experience with the latest minimally invasive approaches for treatment of venous reflux. We use an endovenous radiofrequency (EVRF) vein ablation, a technique in which a catheter delivers energy to seal veins that have reflux. This procedure is done in our surgical rooms on an outpatient basis.

This promotes faster healing and a return to work in days instead of weeks. Using ultrasound guidance, a catheter is inserted into the saphenous vein. The catheter delivers energy to close the vein wall. Varicose veins in branch vessels are then removed under local anesthesia through tiny incisions.

A compressive dressing is placed over the treated area. Walking is encouraged immediately following the procedure. Patients can return in 24-48 hours.

Microphlebectomy or Ligation

Tiny incisions are made allowing a small hook to be inserted under the skin to remove the varicose vein.

Medical Adhesive (Clarivein)

ClariVein is the product most commonly used for mechanochemical ablation. In this procedure, your vein doctor makes a small incision in the middle of the lower thigh or upper calf over the greater saphenous vein. This is where the ClariVein catheter is inserted. Ultrasound is used to guide the catheter into the vein.

Liquid Sclerotherapy and Compression (Chemical Injection)

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure that treats varicose veins and spider veins, usually on your legs. Your healthcare provider uses a needle to inject a special solution into your varicose vein or spider vein. This chemical solution irritates your blood vessel lining, making it expand, stick together and form a scar. This closes off your vein, making it look and feel better.

Sclerotherapy can be used to treat smaller veins. This can be an effective and cost-effective procedure but it does require multiple sessions and the wearing of compression stockings for several days or weeks after the procedure.

Compression Stockings

Prescription compression stockings compress the valves in the veins to help move the blood upward to the heart. They also may help to decrease pain and discomfort by limiting the pooling of blood in the affected veins. This will temporarily help symptoms but will not cure varicose veins, venous ulcers or spider veins.

Compression stockings are prescription garments that offer gradient pressure to encourage healthy blood flow. The socks fit tighter around the foot and gradually loosen their compression as they move up the leg. The socks are designed to help your lower leg veins push blood back up to your heart, creating better blood flow in these vessels.

By supporting blood flow and decreasing pressure inside your veins, compression stockings can go far in relieving symptoms like pain and swelling. They may also help to prevent varicose veins from worsening over time. For this reason, your physician may prescribe compression stockings as a first course of action. Compression is also essential following procedures such as sclerotherapy and endovenous laser treatments, which eliminate the varicose veins, stimulate blood flow and ensure the best results.

Self-Care

Exercising and maintaining a healthy weight may help to keep the problem from getting worse. Elevating the legs above the level of the heart may relieve the swelling and keep the blood pooling in the veins.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at the first consultation?

One of our specialists will assess your medical history and perform a clinical examination of your areas of concern. Clinical photographs of these areas of concern will also need to be obtained for your medical file.

However, clinical examination alone is insufficient, to accurately ‘map out the problem veins’ so patients will also require a duplex ultrasound scan on the legs.

Does the procedure hurt?

The amount of discomfort felt will vary with the individual. The needles used are extremely fine (similar to acupuncture needles) and many are hardly felt at all. The injected solution can sting slightly for short periods of time. If EVLA is used, then minimal discomfort is experienced as it is performed under local anesthetic.

How many treatments will I require?

Your treatment protocol, which includes the number of treatments required, will be determined at your first consultation.

Will vein treatment interfere with my work or home duties?

This is a walk-in, walk-out procedure. Most treatments take about 30 minutes to perform. Following treatment, your daily routine should not be disrupted, normal duties can be resumed.

Does vein treatment require a stay in hospital?

No hospital admission is necessary for our leg vein treatments. Sclerotherapy, ultrasound guided sclerotherapy, endovenous laser ablation, VenaSeal vein glue, etc – all these procedures are performed in clinic.

What are the costs of treatment?

The expected cost for treatment varies between individuals and will be provided in writing following your assessment. All payments are to be made on the day of review/treatment, either by medical aid (medical aid rates – and covered by most medical aids or by cash, eft/pos, credit card or cheque.
